These are powerful stories that define Tasmania's migrant history. There were turbulent years in the migrant's lives as the storm clouds of Europe after WWII left European countries in ashes and ruin. People mourned for their lost families and children who had been sent away. Many left behind European war-torn cities, captures and escapes, forced marches, work camps and underground dangers. For some there was no turning back.

Nine nationalities are represented here and included is one Polish soldier's story of fighting in the desert side-by-side with the Australians at Tobruk.

The author's detective work produces some interesting facts about Tasmania and its people. Letters, documents, interviews, and in some cases, unusual research has been used.

Many of the migrants endured appalling trials to call Tasmania home and this book records their place in Tasmanian history.
